Seas Of Higaro

Challenges

Challenge from Round 1:
Makes this a naval set that is specifically about seafaring, not just exploring. Do it without setting apart blue as a color in a way that will alienate players.

Suggestions on tweaking the Ocean World theme

  • The initial world is poor in resources but powerful, the new world rich but primal and dangerous. (Flesh out both worlds and the travels between those worlds a bit more.)
    • The poor world is the continent of Innistrad? (The planeswalkers Guide does say there are continents outside of the ones depicted in the Innistrad set.) The rich world has Dinos, King Kongs, and/or Oriental Assassins?
  • Just having ships and oceans is not enough, add a twist — A lost continent under the sea with merfolk, sea monsters, elder gods, etc. beginning to come on shore?
  • A submerged world / an archipelago world / an underground ocean world???
  • An "aerial" style of navigation à la Disney's Treasure Planet?

Mechanical Themes

Plunder
"When this enters the battlefield, plunder a card in your hand (Exile that card. When this leaves the battlefield, return each card exiled with this card to where it was exiled from.)"

Each card could plunder different categories:

  • Plunder target artifact - upside
  • Plunder target non-black creature - big upside
  • Plunder another creature you control - downside
  • Plunder each land you control - big downside

"Plundering from the battlefield" is white temporary removal, so that probably should not be used: when black gets rid of a creature, it's not temporary! (Besides flavorwise that mechanic name doesn't fit white much anyway.)

or Hoard / Bury:
"When this enters the battlefield, hoard one treasure. (Exile the top card of your library face-down under ~. When it dies, put the exiled card into your hand.)"

Ambush
"Ambush — Whenever you cast a spell on an opponent's turn, Cloudline Lookout gains flying until end of turn."
or:
"Opportunity — Whenever you cast a spell, Leaping Swashbuckler gains flying until end of turn."

Voyage
Voyage 4 (When Grey Fleet Captain attacks, you may tap exactly 4 creatures you control.)
When Grey Fleet Captain voyages, it gets +5/+5 and gains lifelink until end of turn.
(Comment about phrasing moved to discussion section in order to keep this list a concise idea inventory that people can scan for their pitches.)

Tide
Tide — at the end of your turn, if your life total is odd ~ deals 1 damage to target player. If your life total is even, deal 1 damage to target creature instead.
or
"High Tide (During each player's turn, it is high tide if that player's life total is odd.)" with effects such as "This creature can only attack if it is high tide" or "This creature is unblockable if it is high tide."

Explore
Explore N. (Reveal the top N cards of your library. Put any cards that share a card type with this card in your hand and the rest on the bottom of your library in any order.)
Explore N. (Reveal the top N cards of your library. Put a card that share a card type with this card in your hand and the rest on the bottom of your library in any order.) — Only gets you one card.
Explore for land N. (Reveal the top N cards of your library. You may put a land card from those cards on top of your library and the remaining cards on the bottom of your library in any order.) — Only puts on top of library. Can also explore for other categories such as enchantment, artifact, creature, etc.
